Chapter 6

"Produce Your Witnesses

I.   We KNOW that Jesus Christ lived upon this earth, not because we have seen Him with our eyes or heard Him with our ears, but because the holy Gospels relate the story of His life, because those who saw and heard Him tell us about Him.
In the first place, it is of the utmost importance to perceive in a clear and convincing manner that everything we are told concerning the life of Our Lord is the truth, and nothing but the truth. This life of Christ, as contained in the Gospel, forms a portion of Holy Scripture, and is inspired by the Holy Spirit of God; it rests, therefore, upon divine authority, and is worthy of absolute belief. But even apart from its divine character, this history is as worthy of belief as the most trustworthy of the earliest records. And why is this? When do you, dear reader believe that any history which you read is true? Only when you are quite convinced as to its in particular, when you are able to persuade yourself that the writer knew the truth, and desired to tell it. Well, then, the four evangelists, who related the life of Christ, can come forward and bear witness to its truth.
II.   In the first place, there is no disputing the fact that the authorship of the Gospels has not only been ascribed to these four men, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, but that they, and they alone, did write them in very deed. And to this fact the Fathers of the Church who lived and wrote in the time immediately succeeding the apostolic ages, and numerous Christian theologians who shed their blood for the Faith, bear unhesitating witness; heretics, moreover, do the same, inasmuch as they endeavor to prove their false religious opinions by quotations from the Gospel; the Talmud also, the modern legal code of the Jews, acknowledges the gospel miracles as facts; finally the heathen sages, Celsus and Porphyrius, and even the apostate emperor, Julian, who poured scorn and contempt upon the religion he had so basely abandoned, did not attempt to deny that the life of Christ was written by the four evangelists.
III.   Furthermore, these writers of the Gospel, these witnesses for the truth of it, are entirely trustworthy; their testimony is absolutely reliable. In the first place, they were in a position to tell the truth, since they were well acquainted with the facts. Who indeed could better know the truth than St. Matthew and St. John, who received their vocation as apostles from the divine Redeemer Himself, and who were privileged to be His constant companions, to hear His words and behold His wonderful works? And the two other evangelists, St. Mark and St. Luke, were fully acquainted with the life of Christ, because they wrote their gospels at the suggestion and under the direction of two apostles, St. Peter and St. Paul.
IV.   No reasonable man can doubt that the holy evangelists spoke the truth if he attentively considers the manner in which they wrote. Any one who wishes to deceive the reader, to misrepresent circumstances or facts, would certainly not write in so straightforward, frank, and honest a manner as we find that the sacred historians invariably do. He who desires to distort or conceal the truth would assuredly not relate his own faults and failings and those of his dearest friends as the evangelists do. For this reason Rousseau, one of the bitterest enemies of Christ, is fain to confess: "A history like that of the Gospel is not invented." The Gospel possesses such touching, such utterly inimitable marks of truthfulness, that if the author were an inventor and impostor, he would be more worthy of admiration than the one who is the subject of the gospel narrative. It would be, indeed, a shameless proceeding to reproach an apostle with deceit, unless some further proof were forthcoming. What reasonable motive could they have had to lie? Persecution, chains, imprisonment, death --- no one deceives for such gain as this; no one would get himself hung for a lie!
V.   And yet more! The evangelists wrote amid circumstances and in times which rendered it well-nigh impossible for them to deceive.
In the days when Jesus lived and labored, people had sharp eyes and ears, just as in our day, and the enemies of Christianity were not less cunning and malicious than they are at present. Can you imagine that these people would have been good-natured enough to hold their tongues if the disciples of Jesus had related in the Gospel facts concerning Him which were either falsehoods, or, to say the least, gross misrepresentations? And when, about thirty years after Christ, St. Matthew wrote his gospel, there were still living a great number of those who had formerly been among the bitter enemies of Christ. How would they have attacked the apostle, had he taken upon himself to invent either facts or miracles concerning the life of Christ!
VI.   Thus the evangelists stand before us as absolutely reliable witnesses to the truth. And herein consists the secret of the beauty, simplicity, sanctity, and indestructible power of the holy Gospel. It is not the soul, the mind, the gifts of the writers that we find in them, but the soul, the mind, the thoughts, the maxims of Him who forms the subjects of their writings. Jesus lives in the gospels; He acts, He speaks, He touches the heart, He enlightens and sanctifies. Venerate, therefore, these wondrous pages! Read them in a spirit of faith and with a heart overflowing with the love of God; For

In Hole Scripture God His truth displays,
And yet its pages, read in various ways,
Bring faith to some; cause doubt in other minds:
That one sucks honey, this one poison finds."

  1. Dear Jimmy,
Thank-you for sharing this book with everyone. I just read all of your posts up to chapter 6. In truth I started with 6, moved to 5, to 4, and then started at the beginning and moved upward. My favorite chapter was chapter 4. I also like 5 and 6. There is truth in those words. The author's writing is very reminiscent of the King James Version of the Bible. It is well written as you said. However I would not cut your own writing skills short. What I read of your introduction sounded good.
In this introduction you mentioned, "...when I come across truth I can't help but want to share and talk about it with others." I love talking about what GOD has revealed to us as truth. So thank-you again for sharing these blogs.
I shall adopt your saying from your introduction, “I admit not to know everything.” However one thing that GOD has made truth to me is what He said in James 1:27 “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” To me this means that any religion that is self imposed (Colossians 2:23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.) must be an impure and defiled religion. I think that this includes every religion from Buddhism to Christianity.
But the Bible also says in 2 Timothy 2:14-16 “14 Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers. 15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.” This verse often comes to mind when I get down to the details of words and how they are used. The same word can mean different things to different people. However I know that the LORD GOD my FATHER reveals truth to each person and as they grow in Him.
    Glory be to GOD,
    Isaiah T. S.

  2. Dear Isaiah,
After reading your comment carefully, I would agree with you on the content that any SELF imposed religion is most definitively an impure and defiled religion. As well as have no true fruit produced from the belief or religion. However, i do disagree to the comment, "this includes every religion from Buddhism to Christianity." Of course I agree that Buddhism is a false and defiled religion, but the religion of Christianity, founded by Our Lord Jesus Christ, is the true religion and the perfect path to be walked to save our souls.
James 1:21 "Wherefore casting away all uncleanness, and abundance of naughtiness, with meekness receive the ingrafted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if a man be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he shall be compared to a man beholding his own countenance in a glass."
So when self imposed, we do deceive ourselves. And to save our souls we must be doers and hearers of The Christian Religion that is established by Christ Himself. This religion is the Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father. Not self imposed Religion.

  3. Dear Jimmy, 6/11/12

Thank-you for letting me share comments. I hope never to offend but just wish to share what I believe GOD has shown me as truth. Since we are family I have been bolder in my thoughts than I otherwise would have. I am sure that we will disagree in certain areas of what we know until the day that we stand before the LORD ALMIGHTY and know even as we are known.

So I again say that I don't know everything. I do not think it is wrong to be a Christian. In fact, it is only just recently that I have decided to no longer tell others that I am a Christian. When asked, "What religion do you believe in?" I would like to tell the asker that I am a believer in the fact that JESUS the CHRIST was the Son of GOD. That He was sent to this earth to fulfill the law and become the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of this world. So that He might restore the relationship between GOD and man that was instituted in the beginning of time. To do this He had to walk on the earth and experience the life of a man, and do so without sinning. Having fulfilled these righteous requirements He rose from the dead so that we, now free of sin, might be given a right standing with the FATHER GOD. That is what I wish to relate, in more or less words, to any person who asks me, "What religion do you believe in?" I can't resist a quote from John 3:14-17. It just seems fitting:

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

The reason that I have chosen to no longer call myself a Christian is this. I have come across certain gatherings of people who say they are Christians. Yet they do not rest in the completed work of the Messiah. They still think that they have to work to be saved. I believe that when Jesus said, “It is finished.” (John 19:30) he meant it. I believe that there is no more work that must be done to obtain salvation. JESUS has paid the price and offered the gift of an eternity with Him. That is enough for me.

So it is not that I dislike or look down on Christians or any other religious group. I just don’t want to tell someone that I am a Christian when they might have visited a “Christian” group and heard only bondage preached. In which case they might simply say to themselves, “Oh, he’s one of those guys.”

What do you think? Thank-you again.

    Glory be to GOD,
    Isaiah T.S.

  4. Dear Isaiah,

From reading your text I would like to ask you some questions to clarify what it is you believe. This will help me understand your belief with more clarity so I am not confused by what you mean. Not only that, but as well, will also provide you an opportunity to share with the readers of this blog. My questions are:
1-Is every man free of sin? If yes, does everyone go to heaven? If no, please explain.

2-Is it true you believe that you do not need works to be saved? If yes, would this not be disregarding (James 1:22) that I wrote in my previous text? If no, please explain.

3-What do you mean when you say, "bondage preached"?

I tried to make my questions as straight forward as possible. I mean no sarcasm by any of these questions. I am truly interested in what you believe, and question your previous text because I believe their are a lot of answers in the Bible that can be over seen. I hope you reply back, and maybe we could open another blog so we don't keep commenting on Chapter 6. lol I wouldn't know how to do this, send me a text if you think this is a good idea.

    In Christ the King,
    Jimmy

    1. Dear Jimmy,

Thank-you. We will see how GOD helps me answer. And I know that you aren't being sarcastic.

Before we start here is one of my peeves: I do not like it when someone quotes one verse from the Bible and then takes that verse out of context and assigns their own ideas to it; when the paragraph is talking about something else entirely. So if at any time it seems like I have done so, go and read the entire chapter from which that verse came. Or even the entire book. I expect anytime that I reference something that you as the reader go and read it for yourself and rely on GOD’s SPIRIT to give you understanding.

Secondly I would like to note that all of these quotes from the scripture are from the New King James Version of the Bible. I do not know as to whether that makes any difference to anyone but it is the type of Bible I have at home. One quote (Hebrews 4:9-11) was taken from the 21st Century King James Version of the Bible because I liked its translation better.

Thirdly I have placed [brackets] around certain words in the quotes. This is to take the place of bold font because the comments section will not allow bold font. (Parentheses) are just for thoughts that would not fit in the sentence.

Lastly I want you to know that I am writing from my heart. I am not meaning to accuse or downplay anything or anyone. I also don’t want to say that I know everything. But for now this is the truth that GOD has revealed to me. If any of it is truth to you then that Truth come from the LORD.

1-Is every man free of sin? If yes, does everyone go to heaven? If no, please explain.

      – Hebrews 7:26-28 26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, [for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself]. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever. –

For me I understand that every man is indeed forgiven. That is why JESUS came to the earth in His first coming, to provide a way for men to once again have union with GOD. The reason that sin is bad is because it causes a separation between man and GOD. That is why GOD turned his back on Jesus when He was on the cross. The sin caused a separation. For Jesus took the sins of the world upon him. For me that is all sins. That is all of my sins.

Let us reason that I still have unforgiven sin in my life. As I see it, there is no way that I can remove that sin from myself.

But for the sake of reason, if there is a way for me to remove sin from myself by an action or work it would have to have been instituted by GOD. Right? Here is my reasoning for this statement:

At the beginning of time Cain and Able both made an offering to the LORD. Whose sacrifice did GOD accept? Able’s sacrifice. Because Able killed the firstborn of his flock and also brought their fat.

Just as GOD had instituted the pattern when He killed an animal in the Garden of Eden. When GOD made that first sacrifice and spilt the blood of an animal to cover Adam and Eve, this covered both their physical bodies (they were no longer naked when covered with animal skin) and this covered their spirits (the sin that was now in them was covered by the shedding of blood). When they sinned again they needed a new covering (a new sacrifice) just as when they tore their garment they would need a new covering to cover their bodies.

      Delete
    2. So we see that Cain wanted to offer to GOD in a way that was not instituted by GOD. GOD did not cover the sins of Adam and Eve with the sacrifice of a plant. He gave them the covering of skin (an institution of GOD) instead of Adam and Eve’s fig leaves (an institution of man). There was one only way that GOD instituted the covering of sins so that the separation between Himself and men would be mended for a time. That way was the law. The sacrifice of the blood of the animals was a covering for the sins of the people of Israel. It did not remove those sins but covered them.

This is the reason that GOD must institute the way in which I will try to remove, or cover, the unforgiven sin from my life. So now we know that the way I choose to deal with this unforgiven sin must be a way instituted by GOD.

If I were to justify myself before GOD I would have to do it by the way of the Law. In the Law the Israelites were to travel to Jerusalem, to the temple of GOD, to make a sacrifice for their sins. Therefore, to cover unforgiven sins, I must travel to Jerusalem. Suppose I travel to Jerusalem. That is one condition met. Under the law I would have to sacrifice an unblemished animal in the temple at Jerusalem. I cannot make that sacrifice for there is no temple in Jerusalem. Yet, even if the Jews were to build another temple to the LORD (which I have heard a rumor that modern Jews are talking about this) my sacrifice there would be worthless. Why? Because GOD has done away with the institution of the Law and has ushered in a New Covenant founded on Grace. JESUS fulfilled the Law. In fulfilling it (Perfectly. Without mistake and without stepping short of a single First Coming prophecy) He was able to do away with the Law and He brought in a new Covenant. Just as Jesus said in:

      – Mathew 9:16&17 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse. 17 Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” –

I cannot mix the Old Covenant with the New Covenant. Just as old wineskins cannot be mixed with new wine. I cannot mix working for and earning my salvation through the sacrifice of animals or any other way, with JESUS’ gift of life through His grace.

      – Hebrews 9:11-22 11 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place [once for all], having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 15 And for this reason [He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance]. 16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. 18 Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.” 21 Then likewise he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, [and without shedding of blood there is no remission]. –

      Delete
    3. Therefore I have no other way to be forgiven of my sins except for the shedding of blood. Since shedding the blood of bulls and goats, for the covering of my sins, is no longer valid; only JESUS’ blood cleanses me of sin. The only way that I can [get] forgiven of my sins is to have JESUS die again. I know that He is not going to do that. He died [once for all]. If JESUS didn’t complete His work with sin the first time, why did He do it at all? I think that when JESUS said, “It is finished.” He meant it. He forgave all the sins of the world [once and for all]. (Romans 6:10; Hebrews 7:27; Hebrews 9:12; Hebrews 10:10; Jude 1:3; 1 Corinthians 15:3;)

When I sin I do not say to GOD, “Please forgive me FATHER. I have sinned again.” I say, “Thank-you FATHER that You have forgiven me of this sin. Thank-you for helping me not to do this again.”

–1 Peter 2:21-25 21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: 22“Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; 23 Who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 [who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness]—by Whose stripes you were healed. 25 For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. –

      – Hebrews 10:5-18 5 Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,
But a body You have prepared for Me.
6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin
      You had no pleasure.
7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—
In the volume of the book it is written of Me—
To do Your will, O God.’” 8 Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), 9 then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” [He takes away the first that He may establish the second]. 10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering [of the body of Jesus Christ once for all]. 11 And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which [can never] take away sins. 12 But this Man, after He had offered [one sacrifice for sins forever], sat down at the right hand of God, 13 from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. 14 For by [one offering] He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. 15 But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, 16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” 17 then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” 18 Now where [there is remission of these], there is [no longer] an offering for sin. –

So yes, I believe that all men are forgiven of their sin. I believe I have been forgiven of the impure thoughts that I had this morning. I believe that Adolf Hitler has been forgiven of the atrocities that he committed. But forgiveness of sins does not guarantee entrance into heaven. We still require a right standing with GOD. That is why JESUS rose from the dead. Here is what Paul wrote about JESUS’ resurrection. Without it we are the most pitiable of men:

    4. –1 Corinthians15:1-5 and 12-19 1Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ [died for our sins] according to the Scriptures, 4 and that [He was buried], and that [He rose again] the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve…
12 Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. 14 And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. 15 Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. 16 For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. 17 And if Christ is not risen, [your faith is futile; you are still in your sins]! 18 Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in [this life only] we have hope in Christ, we are [of all men] the most pitiable. –

Now if Jesus did not rise from the dead, He could not return to the Father. And if the Messiah could not return to the FATHER, then He could not send His comforter. The Holy Spirit who lives in us. If Jesus did not rise then we would be sinless but without God living in us. And without that Union with GOD how shall we go to heaven. And when we die, what then? If Christ did not rise then how can we?

      – Acts 2:29-33 29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the [Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear]. –

      – John 16:5-10 5 “But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 [of sin, because they do not believe in Me]; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. –

So what keeps us from heaven if not sin? JESUS said in John chapter 14 verse 6, – “[I am the way], [the] truth, and [the] life. No one comes to [the] Father except through Me.” – GOD has paid the price for our sins. He has offered a way, But only One Way, to heaven and that rest that He has promised for all who believe. That way is JESUS and belief in His completed work. Men can come up no other way.

      – Hebrews 3:14-19 14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, 15 while it is said:
“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
16 For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? 17 Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of [unbelief]. –

    5. Only belief in the CHRIST’s complete and finished work will lead to heaven. Just like in that poster that you gave to our family long ago that depicted the broad and narrow way, JESUS is that narrow way. Many will try to invent ways into heaven or even ignore GOD’s existence altogether. But none will enter into the rest except for those who trust in the MESSIAH and nothing else.
Do you trust in anything else except the MESSIAH’s completed work to get you into heaven?

      – Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 [not of works], lest anyone should boast. –

2-Is it true you believe that you do not need works to be saved? If yes, would this not be disregarding (James 1:22) that I wrote in my previous text? If no, please explain.

Yes I believe that I no longer have to work to justify myself. I know that the Israelites had to at one time justify themselves by works. In that time the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY wrote with His own hand the works by which they must justify themselves. He then spoke the entire law of the Old Covenant to Moses who wrote it down word for word. Now under the New Covenant the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY has taken away the old and brought in the new. Behold all things have been made new. Now GOD has spoken these words to us:

      – Romans 3:24 being justified [freely] by His grace through the redemption that is in CHRIST JESUS, –

      – Romans 4:2-5 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but [not before God]. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham [believed] God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” 4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt.5 But to him who [does not work but believes] on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is [accounted for righteousness], –

      – Romans 6:22-23 22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the [gift of God] is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. –

      – Romans 10:8-11 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you [confess] with your mouth the Lord Jesus and [believe] in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, [you will be saved]. 10 For with the [heart] one believes unto [righteousness], and with the [mouth] confession is made unto [salvation]. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” –

      – Hebrews 4:9-11 9 There remaineth therefore [a rest] for the people of God.10 For he that has entered into His rest, he also hath [ceased from his own works], as God did from His.11 Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall according to the same example of [unbelief]. –

I believe that GOD influenced each book of the Bible. I believe that every book of the Bible is present because of Divine intervention. I believe these words when they say confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, and you shall be saved.

When Paul addresses the letter that he wrote to the Romans he says,
Chapter 1 verse 7: – To all who are in Rome, beloved of GOD, called to be saints: –
Paul is speaking to everyone. Those who are gentiles and Jews. Those who are saved and those who are not. Therefore he lays out the requirements of salvation through the New Covenant. Through the Christ.

When James addresses his letter he says,
Chapter 1 the last part of verse 1, – …To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad: Greetings, –

    6. James is addressing Jews. Jews who have for all of their lives known only one way to make oneself right with GOD. The works of the Old Covenant. I do not know what it was like to live under the Law. There were so many laws to follow and the breaking of just one merited a sacrifice for atonement. I do not claim to know of the mentality of the twelve tribes of that time. However, if we look at James’ letter, as written to those who have been bound by the Law and then so recently freed, we can look at it as instruction to the Jews who have accepted salvation and do not know what to do next. So James reminds them of the works of the Old Covenant and then speaks of the works in the New Covenant.

      – James 2:17-18 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. –

James asks, “show me your faith without your works.” He is speaking to someone who without works has no faith. One who, to show his faith, works and works to prove he has faith. But if someone would take away his works he would have no way of showing he is faithful. Then James says, “I will show you my faith by my works.” I will show you that I do works because of the faith that I have. If you take away my works I still have my faith. It is because of my faith that I want to share this good news. And what is sharing the gospel of Messiah but a good work. However James salvation is still secured even if he is not able to share the Word of the LORD. When James says, “faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead,” I believe it means this. When GOD gives you faith it produces a desire in you to do good works. To please the FATHER. If this desire to do good works is not there, if you do not desire to please the FATHER, then that faith is dead. It is not true faith, real faith from GOD.

When I light a candle in a dark house, do I keep that candle under a basket where only I can enjoy its light? Or will I share it with everyone else in the house so that they may see what they are doing as well? When we hear the Good news of salvation we can’t help but share it. It is not because we are required to share it or else we will be sent to hell. With GOD living inside of us we desire beyond earnestly to please and share what we have been given. We are not required to work. But because we are loved so much, and in turn love back, we wish to work.

I say is it not a work to trust in the LORD as your sole provider of life? Is it not a work to say, “I, Isaiah Treat Silkwood, cannot justify myself, the LORD has done it all for me.”? For me it is. I desire very much to justify myself. Subconsciously I justify myself in everything that I do. But when I am able to say, “LORD, you have justified me,” there is a great rest and a peace that surpasses all understanding. And I cannot say those words in my own power.

      – James 1:22 22But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. –

If I am very sick and you have brought me the only remedy, in a small bottle, and you tell me, “Drink this and you will be healed.” At which point am I a doer and not just a hearer? I can hear your words and instruction for this bottle. But if I do not drink I am a hearer only. But if I act on your word and drink from the bottle I have become a hearer and a doer. The same is true for the gospel of the Messiah. If I hear that all I must do is,

      – Romans 10:9 that if you [confess] with your mouth the Lord Jesus and [believe] in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, [you will be saved]. –

If I do not act on that Word I am a hearer only. But if I believe it and act on it. If I accept that gift freely given I have become a doer of the Word.

One more verse for mention. James makes a reference to Abraham, in 2:23 of his letter. Paul makes a reference to Abraham, in Romans 4:3. These both refer to Genesis 15:6

    7. – Genesis 15:5-6 5 Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”6 [And he believed in the LORD], and He accounted it to him for righteousness. –

By simply believing, a right standing with GOD was accounted to Abraham. A right standing means you have been granted to stand upright in the LORD’s presence.

I ask you, what works do you believe lead to salvation?

3-What do you mean when you say, "bondage preached"?

For this question I could answer many things. Bondage to me says, “You have to do something to earn salvation.” Freedom says, “GOD did everything for your salvation. Accept the gift of relationship and life with the Creator, which He is offering to you.”

I will give you an example of what an acquaintance said, “I finally convinced my dad to come back to church with me after he, for many years, did not attend. (He had left his last congregation because he was forced to pay tithes.) When we walked into the church the first thing that the preacher said was, ‘I see some of you here that I have not seen in a long time. So to make up for your absence you can give an extra big tithe today.’ Well that just ruined it for my dad. He never went back.” I know that I didn’t quote that exactly but that was the point of his experience.

Why did GOD institute tithing? Was it not because the tribe of Levi was to minister unto the LORD? Didn’t they see to all of the sacrifices and continually make offerings to the LORD? Therefore the LORD made provision for all the tribe of Levi. He provided a certain number of cities for them in the Promised Land. Plus, the other tribes were to tithe that the Levites may have money. They needed to have the moneys so that they could provide for their families while they worked for the LORD.

Now that the Law has been done away with because of the CHRIST’s fulfillment of it, why do the churches of today ask for tithes? The preachers of some, not all, take salaries so that they can live off of GOD’s word. Are these preachers ministering to GOD? Are they offering up sacrifices continually? GOD does not require that under the New Covenant.

That is one example of “bondage preached.” I know that not every church practices this. But some do. Therefore I am not a Christian. I am a believer in Jesus as the Christ. I believe that He did everything that He said He did. And I believe Jesus has fulfilled all of the prophecies that pertain to His first coming. I believe that I have been given salvation, and life eternal in the presence of my Creator, freely.

I hope this answers your questions. However, I am sure it will lead to more. I welcome that because God is my helper. I asked God for help in writing this. Everything that is good and pure in this comment is from God. I would like to hear your answers to my questions at the end of response 1 and 2. I leave you with one more verse. Thank-you for asking these questions. They have helped me to sort out and put straight my belief.

      Glory be to GOD,
      Isaiah T. Silkwood

      – 2 Peter 1:2-3 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has [given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness], through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been [given to us exceedingly great and precious promises], that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. –
